The Most Important Check: Looking Along the Blank
Now comes one of the simplest and yet most important steps in the entire fly rod building process.
Hold the rod section at eye level.

You should repeat this check repeatedly throughout the build.

For this, the complete fly rod is assembled, the line is threaded through the guides, and the blank is carefully brought under controlled load.
Now you can observe how the line follows the bending curve.
The goal is harmonious load and line guidance without conspicuous large angles between individual guides.
The fact that the line runs closer to the blank in places under high load or even lightly touches it is not automatically a defect.
More important is the even distribution along the working blank.
Which Winding Thread for Snake Guides?
For most single-handed fly rods, size A winding thread is an excellent starting point.
It is fine enough for elegant wraps and also pleasant to work with.
For very delicate rods, even finer thread can be used.
For powerful saltwater, Spey, or switch rods, other thread strengths may be appropriate.
However, thread strength alone is not the decisive factor.
The length of the wrap also influences weight and appearance.
Wrap as Short as Sensible
A high-quality fly rod does not require oversized guide wraps.
The wrap must securely hold the guide foot.
Nothing more.
Especially in the tip section:
Every additional millimeter of thread will later require additional rod building varnish.
And every additional amount of varnish mass sits precisely where you actually want to avoid it.
A single, slightly too long wrap will not ruin a rod.
But ten unnecessarily large wraps add up.

Start Wrapping Cleanly
Start a few millimeters in front of the guide foot.
Secure the winding thread with a few turns and then work evenly towards the guide.
The thread tension should be constant.
Not loose.
But not with maximum tension either.
The wrapping should securely hold the guide without creating unnecessary tension in the build.
As soon as the thread reaches the beveled guide foot, it should climb as evenly as possible.
This is precisely why careful preparation of the guide foot is worthwhile.
Each Turn Should Lie Flush
When wrapping, each thread turn should lie directly next to the previous one.
No crossovers.
No visible gaps.
Small irregularities can be corrected with a burnishing tool or thread packer.
Carefully push the turns together.
Do not use sharp-edged tools.
The blank, and especially thin-walled tip sections, should not be subjected to unnecessary mechanical stress.
Insert the Finish Loop in Time
About six to eight turns before the end of the wrap, a small pull-through loop is inserted.
Then, the last turns are laid over it.
The thread is cut, guided through the loop, and pulled under the wrap.
Afterward, trim the excess thread as cleanly and flush as possible.
A fresh, very sharp blade helps immensely with this.
Before Varnishing Comes the Most Important Check
When all the snake guides are wrapped, the fly rod is not yet ready for varnish.
Now it's time to check again.
And thoroughly.
Assemble all rod sections.
Look from the reel seat towards the tip.
Rotate the rod.
Examine it from multiple angles.
Every guide must lie in a common axis.
A wrapped guide can usually still be minimally corrected at this stage.
After varnishing, this option is practically gone.
Now, five extra minutes of checking are better than five years of annoyance over a crooked guide.
Don't Forget the Stripping Guides

With classic 2K rod building finish, resin and hardener must be mixed precisely in the specified ratio.
Inaccurate quantities can lead to the finish:

Because any unnecessarily introduced air may later end up as a bubble in the guide winding.
Rotate blank during curing
After applying the finish, the rod should slowly rotate in a Rod Dryer or drying motor.

Without rotation, especially with larger windings, there is a risk of:
runs,
one-sided flow,
or uneven transitions.
Especially in the first few minutes, each winding should be checked repeatedly.
Handle heat very carefully
Small air bubbles can be reduced with a little heat on some rod building finishes.
But here the rule is:
Less is more.
Do not hold a strong open flame directly under the blank.
Too much heat can alter the epoxy and, in the worst case, damage the blank finish or components.
Patience in rod building is almost always a better solution than force.
