Der Materialaufwand für eine selbstgebaute Fliegenrute liegt – je nach Blank- und Komponentenqualität – meist zwischen einer günstigen Einsteiger- und einer gehobenen Serienrute, dafür erhältst du eine Rute, die exakt auf deine Vorlieben bei Aktion, Optik und Beringung abgestimmt ist. Viele Kunden kombinieren zudem Restbestände über mehrere Builds hinweg, was die Kosten pro Rute weiter senkt.

Even without prior experience, getting started is feasible: Begin with a ready-made ringing concept, a beginner blank, and a basic tool set – this takes care of the most important decisions for you. The right guide concept depends on the blank length, AFTM class, and desired rod action – a 9-foot 5-weight rod will have a different guide setup than a short bamboo or fiberglass blank for stream fishing. You can find pre-tested guide concepts for common blank lengths in our header/footer section as well as directly with the corresponding products – this way, you can avoid typical beginner mistakes when building your first rod.

We have been building our own fly rods since 2006 and know the components from our own workshop practice, not just from a catalog. As a rod building expert, we advise on blank selection, ringing concepts and material combinations, and curate our assortment specifically for fly fishermen instead of a random mass selection.

Fly rod building has different requirements than building spinning or casting rods: The guides are much more closely spaced (more, smaller rings) for an even load distribution during line casting, the blanks are designed for casting weight or AFTMA classes instead of casting weight in grams, and grip shapes are based on the casting style (e.g., cigar or half-wells grips). At MB Custom Rods, we have deliberately specialized in fly fishing and rod building, rather than offering a broad all-round assortment.

For a complete fly rod, you need: a blank, a reel seat, a grip (cork or EVA), snake guides, stripping guides and a tip top, winding thread, rod finish/epoxy, and basic tools like a rod wrapping jig or a rod building stand, a scalpel/blade, and brushes. We carry all these rod building components sorted by category in our shop, so you can put together your individual set.

Rod building means assembling and crafting a fishing rod from individual components – blank, handle, reel seat, guides (guide train), and winding thread – instead of buying a ready-made rod. The process roughly is:

1. Select a blank (length, casting weight/AFTM class, action depending on the application)
2. Determine the guide train concept and position the guides
3. Assemble the handle and reel seat
4. Wrap the guides with winding thread and seal with rod finish
5. Dry, inspect, done, fish

For beginners, a rod building kit including a guide train concept and rod building instructions is sufficient – both can be found in our shop or as a free resource.
