McFarland GTX Fiberglass Blank – 8’6” #4

Modern fiberglass blank with range, feel, and an exceptionally harmonious action.

The McFarland GTX 8’6” #4 combines the characteristic feel of a high-quality fiberglass rod with the performance one expects from a modern fly rod. At 8’6” in length, this blank offers significantly more range and line control than classic, short fiberglass rods – without losing the special character of fiberglass.

The action is progressive, smooth, and deep-working. The blank loads very pleasantly even at short range, yet it simultaneously possesses enough reserves to present a #4 line in a controlled manner at medium to longer distances. The result is a rod that does not want to be cast frantically, but rather impresses with a clean rhythm and controlled acceleration.

Modern Fiberglass

The GTX is not a nostalgic fiberglass blank intended exclusively for short casts on a small stream. Its 8’6” length makes it an exceptionally versatile all-around blank for trout fishing.

Dry flies can be presented with finesse, light nymphs guided in a controlled manner, and smaller streamers are also within its range of application. The length is particularly interesting where line control, mending, and range are required.

During the fight, one of the great strengths of fiberglass finally becomes apparent: the blank works deep and evenly, maintains constant contact with the fish, and protects fine leaders excellently. At the same time, even an average fish is simply fun on such a rod.

For rod builders looking for something special

McFarland blanks enjoy a special reputation among enthusiasts of high-quality fiberglass rods. The GTX is aimed at rod builders who do not simply want to build another fast carbon rod, but a fly rod with a distinct character and unmistakable casting feel.

At 8’6” in line weight #4, this blank offers a particularly interesting basis for this: long enough for larger waters and versatile fishing, fine enough for an elegant dry fly rod, and with exactly the smooth behavior that distinguishes a good fiberglass rod.

Two colors to choose from

The McFarland GTX is available in two blank colors:

Clear – the classic, transparent fiberglass look. The fiberglass weave remains visible and underscores the original, technical character of the material.

Spring Green – an extraordinary and particularly characterful color variant for a custom build that also stands out visually. Spring Green is available at an extra charge.

Especially in combination with individually selected windings, grips, and reel seats, both variants offer an excellent basis for a truly personal build.

Field of application

Ideal for trout fishing on small to medium-sized rivers, dry flies and emergers, light nymphs, and smaller streamers. Also an excellent choice for fine leaders and anglers who appreciate a calm, controlled casting style and the special feedback of a fiberglass rod.

Our conclusion

The McFarland GTX 8’6” #4 is a fiberglass blank for those who do not solely associate glass with short, slow stream rods. Its additional length significantly expands its range of application and makes it an exciting alternative to the classic carbon rod.

More range and line control than with a typical short glass rod – but with exactly the feel, deep loading, and immediate contact for which we love fiberglass.

An extraordinary blank for an individual build that consciously stands out from the mainstream.
